HTML Colours
In HTML colours are defined using a hexadecimal (hex) notation. A hex notation contains six digits, two for each of Red, Green and Blue. The highest value is 255 (hex FF), and the lowest value is 0 (hex 00). Hex values should be started with a # sign.

Colourful Possibilities
With Red, Green and Blue having ranges between 0 and 255 means you get 256 brightness possibilities per colour, giving you well over 16 million unique colours to utilise.
Shades of Grey
By making RGB values all equal you have an unbiased light, causing shades of grey.
